I was a 12year old and still part of a Air Force family when this happen and when my dad picked me up to take me to the Ops. building I heard the flight chatter change as the news filtered through the net. Try as might the tears just ran. I had seen crashes before and it’s a fact of life I could and never will harden my heart for. These were personal heros to me.As I followed the investigation (as much as a 12year old can), Even now the lesson and Gene’s thoughts have guided me. To most of the everyay world this day will pass without the notice of these brave men. In my heart theres a place rrssrved for those who dare to reach for the stars.

Thanks for your inspirational writing, Steve. I am currently training thanks in large part to the constant nudging from all you new media folks. In the light of all the recent examples of a lack of competence or letting judgment slip (to be very generous) we need reminders of this kind of attitude.
